What exactly is Minocycline HCl?

Minocycline HCl is a tetracycline antibiotic that is used to treat skin infections and severe acne. This medication is also used to treat a variety of different bacterial diseases, including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

Minocin, Minoz (manufactured by Intas Pharma), and Cynomycin are some of the brand names for minocycline HCl. (Wyeth Pharma)



Important Minocycline HCl Information


If you have a known allergy to Minocycline HCl or any other tetracycline antibiotic, such as demeclocycline, minocycline, or tetracycline, do not use it. Notify your doctor if you have liver illness, renal disease, asthma, or a sulfite allergy before using this medication.

Minocycline HCl can interfere with and reduce the effectiveness of birth control tablets. While taking this medication, it is recommended that you use a nonhormonal type of birth control such as a condom, diaphragm, or spermicidal.

Children should not take minocycline 100 mg HCl. In children under the age of eight, this medication can cause persistent yellowing or greying of the teeth.


While using Minocycline HCl, drink lots of fluids. Even if your symptoms have subsided, you must finish the entire course of this medication. Failure to finish an antibiotic course may result in a relapse of your condition, which may be drug-resistant and difficult to treat.

Minocycline HCl is classified as a pregnancy category D medication by the FDA. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use this medication. If you become pregnant while using this medication, notify your doctor.

Take all of the precautions listed above before using Minocycline HCl (Minocin, Minoz, Cynomycin). Discuss these with your doctor and clear up any reservations you may have regarding this medication.

How should I administer Minocycline HCl?

Take Minocycline HCl (Minocin, Minoz, Cynomycin) exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as directed on the drug label. Do not change the dosage unless your doctor instructs you to. Also, do not take this medication after the time limit has passed. A patient booklet is included with all drugs. Refer to the instructions in them for more information on that specific drug.

Minocycline HCl should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Always keep this medication in a cool, dry place.
